Retirement Savings Planner - RECENT REVISION HISTORY
*** Continuously updated since 1995 ***

ALL = applies to all versions
PRO = applies just to Professional Edition

2008.2 released 2/26/2008
- ALL: If you had a % sign in a Description on Infusions, Expenses or Investments and tried to copy and paste into another description, occasionally this would
cause a run-time error type mismatch.  This did not happen all the time but anyway this is now fixed.
- ALL: Printing Assumptions would hide some N/A fields if main client was retired, but would also hide spouse fields even if spouse was NOT retired.  We
changed the print code to decide independently whether each are retired or not.  If retired, then Annual Job Income, Company Match, Contributions, and Pre-Retirement Return will show as "N/A" for Not Applicable.
- ALL: Fixed Social Security bug that would display just one year of Social Security benefit if using built-in estimate.
- ALL: Fixed issue with Social Security taxation when Retirement Income Goal was set to something low.  Calculation was not looking at Special Expenses.
- ALL: Fixed SSA website link on Settings menu.
- ALL: Fixed issue with Investments, Infusions, and Special Expense screens where hitting Tab on last row and last column could cause a run-time error.  We
have added code to add a new row when you tab off the last column of the last row.
- ALL: Changed the way Setting-> Tax Deferred Distributions -> Don't Allow Pre-59 1/2 Distributions works in the Spreadsheet calculations.  Before this
release, the tax-deferred investments would accumulate growth but the "Tax-Deferred Growth" column would show $0 in it which was confusing.  Now theprogram shows the actual Tax-Deferred Growth in that column even though it does not use that amount or any principal from Tax-Deferred if you have thissetting checked. Note that this change does NOT affect the future investment balance calculations it only affected what was shown in the "Tax-Deferred Growth" column on the spreadsheet.

2008.1 released 1/28/2008
- ALL: Added Settings -> Taxes where you can select whether to have the program net taxes out of Social Security and Pension.
- ALL: If you have a couple where both work and one retires earlier than the other, the program applies Annual Job Income to the retirement income needs. In prior versions no taxes were automatically netted out of that job income. In this version we now net the effective tax rate out of that income before applying it to the income needs.
- ALL: Updated built-in Social Security benefit estimate with 2008 data including COLA, Maximum Earnings, Bendpoints etc.
- ALL: Older spouse 50% bene calc would show $0 on main screen and SS if the Start Age occurred in a year prior to the main spouse's Start Age. This is changed so that 50% spouse bene can begin BEFORE worker begins their benefit. See SSA website for rules allowing this.
- ALL: If 50% bene calc applies, then double clicking the Soc Sec Amount "label" on the spouse tab will pop-up some details about that calculation.
- ALL: Built-in Soc Sec benefit calculation was looking at Retirement Age and not Soc Sec Start Age when calculating the early and late benefit adjustments; this is now changed
- ALL: Built-in Soc Sec benefit calculation now tied to past CPI data similar to the way SSA.gov does it in their online calculators
- ALL: Added estimate of taxes on Social Security including estimate of what % of Social Security benefit is taxable. This is just an estimate but a bit more accurate than always taxing 100% of Social Security.
- ALL: Set minimum width of column headers on Export to Excel. Otherwise columns are too narrow and require a lot of manual resizing.
- ALL: Print Detail Report screen: if you had an error in the From Age or To Age the error trapping code was an endless loop continually popping up the error message with no way out other than killing the program. This is now fixed.
- PRO: If you used File -> Save As, data was saved to 2nd file and you were then editing that file. However, the Caption title at top of program was not updating with the name of the new 2nd file, so some users thought they were editing original file. This is now fixed. File->Save As will create a 2nd file and you will be editing that 2nd file after the Save As process. Note that the 1st file should remain untouched from last save.
- ALL: On Save, the program creates a dated backup of your file before changes were made. This allows you to recover old versions in case of program failure or to create a backup history of file changes.
- ALL: Paycheck Savings Tool - Fixed problem where if you left Income $0 then program would crash from illegal division by zero.
- PRO: File->New will now add the file name to the most recently used file list on the File menu. Previously only File->Open would do that.
- ALL: Fixed intermittant errors with data values at bottom of main screen clearing back to 0 when clicking the mouse off the input box.

2007.2d / 2007.3 released 4/25/2007
- Installers updated with Windows VISTA compatibility
- Windows VISTA manifest file added to installers
- All installers are signed with Authenticode certificate to eliminate the Unkown Publisher pop-up in Internet Explorer
- All: Changed and updated Built-in Social Security Estimate algorithm to be more accurate when compared to the Quick Calculator on SSA.gov.  Our algorithm previously used a flat 4% to build the past earnings history from the current Annual Job Income.  We changed this to be like the QuickCalc where it uses the Average Wage Index historical series to determine on a year-by-year basis how to build the past earnings based on historical values.  This generates estimates that are much closer to the SSA.gov Quick Calculator.  Note that the estimate MAY BE LOWER than previously calculated.
- All: Added Federal Marginal Rates to the help file so that user can access them without going to the IRS website. Also updated this revision history for all of the 2007 updates so far.

- All: Soc Sec Earnings past history is rounded to nearest $100 to indicate to user that this is an ESTIMATOR and not an ACTUALATOR
- PRO: Added back the checkbox on Custom Contact Info as it was causing trouble; removed other code to automatically set it
- PRO: Fixed Tab Order for Spouse section on the New Client Info screen
- All: Added new code to check End Illustration At Age value.  If too big then no rows appear in the spreadsheet. (thanks Russell Bridgewater for your assistance)
- All: Fixed some of the checkboxes looking ugly on colored window background by adding transparent labels.
- PRO: Added error prompt when saving customization info. If you don't have privileges to write the file, then it will not save contact info or disclaimers.
- PRO: Added new 5th paragraph to allowed Customize Disclaimers function.

2007.2c
- All: Updated additional data points in the Social Security estimate; some of them were not updated to current values

2007.2b
- All: removed "end" in StopApplication as caused weird errors on program exit
- Lite: disabled Investments, Infusions and Expenses from Print Detailed Report screen in LITE edition
- Lite: exit ad was not showing during Lite edition trial period
- Lite: fixed PasswordLite form to have new green look

2007.2 released 3/30/2007
- Pro: Reset Owner col on Investments to Client/Joint otherwise when set to Spouse it stays spouse even if you OPEN a single client file... this messes up the investment totals
- Pro: Print Fact Finder now properly defaults to the Docs directory where Fact Finder is located; you can open that doc in Word, edit as needed and print from Word.  This allows you to have your own version of the Fact Finder rather than having only a hardcoded version from Torrid.

2007.1c
- All: fixed naming issue on investment screen tabs
- All: fixed main tab names resize when maximizing form
- All: changed button panel height to form height on resize or load so that it doesn't hide Exit based on monitor size or resolution
- All: changed investments form ScaleMode to Twips instead of Pixels (Thanks Dave Leney)

2007.1b
- All: fixed naming issue on main tabs... need to flip between profile names and open client file TTRec names
- All: fixed MRU list which was failing due to .dat filter in loop reading registry

2007.1 released 2/9/2007

- All: New Updated XP look-and-feel to the User Interface
- All: New Menu style with color and icons
- All: New Updated Button styles with Hover and Click States

- All: Updated Tax and Social Security Calculations to 2007

- Couples/Pro: Built-in Social Security benefit estimate now applies to Spouse as well
- All: Changed Paycheck Tax Savings tool so you can change the values on that screen. It still populates the screen from the data on
the main plan, but you can then edit the income, contribution rate, and tax brackets right on that screen and see the effect.
- All: New design for secondary screens so it's not such a "boring gray" experience
- All: New Compiled Help CHM format with Index of Keywords, Searching, etc. This paves the way to add more visual help with screenshots and "How to" pages.  We will be adding more content later in the year.

- All: If you X out of program, AppUpdate Yes/No should now work.  It was hanging on some machines.

Version 2006.4 released 10/31/2006
- All: Spreadsheet view now has Year and Ages frozen as you scroll to the right so you always know which row/year you are viewing
- All: Copy/Paste is now active on the Investments, Cash Infusions, and Special Expenses grids. This allows you to Copy from Excel into these grids or paste from Excel into these grids. So, for example, if you had a list of investments in an Excel spreadsheet, you can now select them in Excel and paste them onto the Investments grid without having to retype the data. Only requirement is that the data is in the same order and is of the same size and shape selection.
- All: Print Detailed Report now allows you to enable/disable printing of the Spreadsheet pages - previously this was always mandatory
- All: Print Detailed Report - Personal Info & Assumptions now shows the assumed tax rates used; this was overlooked in prior versions (thanks Jason Levine)
- All: Total Effective Tax Rate is no longer a simple sum of Federal plus State, but now excludes the State/Local taxes from the Federal taxation since State Income Tax is deductible in calculating Federal taxes (thanks Stephen Lovell)
- All: Investments, Infusions, Expenses screens sometimes entered a zero on first key stroke after Tab; this new grid component should fix that issue
- All: First names now printed on Personal Info & Assumptions page (thanks Tony Vallera).
- Pro: Spouse birthyear is now blank when New Client screen comes up; thus you don't have to clear it each time if there's no spouse
- All: If you entered a Special Expense with an inflation rate BEFORE start age > 0% AND a start age equal to the primary client's current age, the program was inflating the value 1 year which overstated the value in the first yea of the expense. In the case where the start age is the same as current age, there is no BEFORE period and that inflation rate should be irrelevant. This is now fixed so that this extra year of inflation does not occur.
- All: Program will now ask you Yes/No whether you want to perform an AppUpdate check. This uses the internet to check our website for a new version. It will tell you if a new release is found or not (thanks Bob Ryker).
- Pro: Customize Contact Info -> advertising text box had gotten sized differently than actual textbox on splash screen. By fixing the size, the editing now matches what you see on the Splash Screen advertising text box (thanks Waverly Rose).
- Pro: Added File -> Print Fact Finder menu item that opens Torrid Tech branded fact finder in Word. You can then edit as needed, rebrand, and print.
- Pro: Added better formatting to spreadsheet data when using Export to Excel function. Headings are now formatted and centered. Dollar values are formatted as dollars rounded to nearest dollar.
- Couples: Added carriage return after Raise factor on printed Personal Info & Assumptions page.

Version 2006.3 various releases

2006.3f
- All: Printing Investments, Infusions and Expenses pages would show "intentionally left blank" type message if you skipped a number of rows and just entered a value far down on spreadsheet. This is now fixed so that that message would only show at end even if you skipped a number of rows.
- All: If you had a Cash Infusion in the year an RMD occurred, AND it was set to Tax-Deferred then it was being added before the RMDs were calculated which mistakenly inflated the end of prior year balance. Tax-Deferred Infusions now are added in AFTER the RMDs are calculated. (thanks Diane Byrne)

2006.3e
- Personal: Retirement Returns now print on Detailed Report - Personal Info & Assumptions page, if you are already retired (thanks Gary Hack).
- PRO: Changed Life Needs printed report to remove the Retirement references from the year-by-year spreadsheet. This was confusing because the Life Needs print is focused on current income needs funded by life insurance, and not on retirement income needs.
- PRO: Changed Tools menu items to cap the investment returns at 12%. This includes Life Insurance Needs, Added Savings Solver, and Saving for a Future Goal.
- All: When you click a label on main screen, it activates the input text box. This was not working properly on every label, but has now been fixed on all labels.
- PRO: Added a 4th paragraph of disclaimers that you can customize on the final disclaimer page
- All: Changed title printing on Classic style report to be consistent with other page title format.
- All: Changed pagination on Classic style report Personal Information page so that it does not print a blank page afterwards (happened on some printers).

2006.3d
- All: If you disable the RMDs, then it shows the word "DISABLED" on the spreadsheet column for the RMDs so that you know why no values are listed.
- problem with the balances getting cleared out when you start retirement... thus it "starts over" each run thru....causes calculation problems..

2006.3c
- problem with the way contributions were credited if one spouse retired early - caused balances to be OVERSTATED once first spouse retired (thanks Adam Cornwell)

2006.3b
- All: Links to internet sites now work in latest Firefox browsers. Previously it would launch the browser but not send in the web url
- All: If you have line on a graph and change a data point... dollars in boxes don't change until you moved mouse again over graph. Changed it so update of data readers occurs instantly when the recalculation is triggered.
- Pro: Added tab highlighting on Customize Contact info screen so that it is more apparent which field you are editing.
- All: Added "line freeze" to graph reader lines. Single click a location with your mouse to fix the line in place. Move mouse off graph and back on to free line again for movement. This helps you focus on a certain important "point" you want to show a client. It also helps fix data values for printing of the graphs.
- Pro: Changed code that pops up when Client File is open and you try to change age. It was popping up too much the way it was coded before.

2006.3
- All: You can now disable the Required Minimum Distributions taken from the Tax-Deferred investments pool. This is for a non-qualified annuity, for example.
- All: If there is no Spouse, then the Spouse RMD Columns are now hidden on the Spreadsheet.
- All: You must enter Software Registration info in order to go into the program. Changed code to prevent X out of that screen which then creates program errors.
- PRO: If you had no Client File open, changing the Current Age did not change the RMD calculations. Since the RMD calculations are based on the client birthyear, changing the Age directly is no longer allowed if you have a Client File Open. If you have no Client File Open, you can change the Current Age fields directly and the RMD calculations will track based on the same age.
- PRO: If you close a Client File that had a spouse, the program now reverts to hidden Spouse on Close. Otherwise you get odd results seeing the spouse calculations with no spouse data.

Version 2006.2 various releases

2006.2i
- All: You can now set the END of the illustration to a maximum age less than 100 via new input on Other Assumptions tab.
- All: Initial Social Security Start Age is now set based on the birthdate (ex:. 1960 and above birth year means regular start age is 67).
- All: If you use the built-in Social Security estimate, then the first year benefit and assumed COLA is now properly printed on the Detailed Report.
- All: If you use the built-in Social Security estimate, the first year estimated benefit now shows in the Annual Amount for primary client in grayed out field instead of generic $0.
- PRO: Edit Current Client on Pro menu now disabled if no Client File is open.
- PRO: Spouse dies radio button on Life Needs tool is now disabled if there is no spouse.

2006.2h
- RARE: fixed job income and raise not saving in pro client files for advisor who set the defaults to already retired when they open program.

2006.2g
- if you had a spouse and both had Tax-Deferred accounts, in some cases the RMDs from the spouse account were not being properly deducted from the total investments even though they were properly deducted from the spouse's separate tax-deferred investements pool (thanks Paul Cyr).
- if you entered any Special Expenses to be deducted straight from the Tax-Deferred investments via last column setting, in some cases you would see the Total Investments go negative which lead to some odd calculations. This is now corrected. (thanks Peter O'Neill).

2006.2f
- fixed bug on Pro cover page printing... if you didn't enter a phone or email it would show the label anyway (thanks Rick Sienkiewicz).

2006.2e
- found bug in Pension Age code (thanks Denis Weiss).

Version 2006.1 released 1/9/2006
- All: Added Required Minimum Distributions calculations - RMDs are now calculated and taken into account for those with Tax-Deferred investments starting at age 70.5. Currently uses the Uniform Table ONLY and does not use the Joint table if spouse is more than 10 years younger.
- All: Can view the RMD calculations on the spreadsheet.
- All: The Social Security estimate now uses the 20 year average of Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) from the SSA. This rate is 2.98%. The announced COLA rate for 2006 was 4.1%.
- All: Updated the Social Security estimate to reflect the latest 2006 data changes for National Average Earnings, Maximum Creditable Earnings, Bendpoints, etc.
- PRO: Can add client photo to the client information screen.
- All: Changed activation key format to support new 2006 subscriptions; will make it easier to send clients new activation keys and reduce confusion about renewals.
- All: Changed order of Income Graph data readers so that the colors from left to right match the colors on graph from top to bottom; reduces confusion when looking at the Income Graph.
- All: Fixed bug where Investment Growth sometimes showed a negative value in some retirement years.

Version 2005.7 released 11/22/2005
We apologize in the delay in this release but as you can see below we have done a lot of changes and improvements to make the software as reliable and useful as it can be. If you already have installed the 2005 version AND have not already updated using the AppUpdate engine inside the running software, then download and install the following patch: 401k20057patch.exe

- PRO: If toggling between Already Retired back to not yet retired, program now restores your Income and Raise data.

- PRO: Changed dialog title on File -> Save Client As... to show "Save Client Data File As..." for better clarity (thanks Don Ross)

- PRO: Tax-Deferred Contribution and Match were not always loaded in correct format, dollars or percentage. This is fixed now. (thanks Don Ross)
- All: Fixed sporadic error on printing "Overflow Error 6" (thanks Steven Chiang)
- PRO: On New Client or Clear, program now clears out the investments, infusions, and special expenses values, and resets descriptions to the defaults.
- PRO: If you use the Life Needs tool, it now hides the selected decedents' age on both graphs to reduce confusion (thanks Jim Heinrichs).

- All: Fixed type mismatch error on Print Savings Graph function that crashed program on some computers.
- All: Fixed problems with changing Settings menu -> various contributions from Dollars to Percentages when on Other Assumptions tab.
- All: Social Security inputs were not linking to the correct place in the Help file. This is fixed now.

- Pro: Changed File menu New, Open, Save, etc. to add word "Client" for clarity; New Client, Open Client, Save Client, etc.
- All: Changed the print dialogs so that when you click Print it shows just the Windows print dialog by itself without the RSP dialog underneath.
- All: Shortcuts to Readme an Help files under Program Files were put under a 2004 folder accidentally. New installers put those under the correct 2005 folder (thanks John Howard).
- Pro: If you entered a 2 letter first name for a client like "Ed", then it would show "Client" on the main screen tab instead of "Ed". This now works fine. (thanks Wally Smith).
- All: Fixed bug where in some cases based on large age difference between client and spouse, moving off retirement income graph to right would cause a "subscript out of range" error. (thanks John Howard!)

- All: Updated ToolTipText on the Add Row and Delete Row buttons on the Investments, Expenses, and Infusions screens. The old text was slightly outdated (thanks Ed Krause).
- All: Can now print report thru max age of client on the spreadsheet. If Spouse exists this would be thru age when Spouse turns 100.
- Pro: Investments screen now shows "Client" instead of "You" for the account owner column and also for the aggregate summary.
- All: Built-in Social Security estimate now extends to end of illustration if spouse is younger

- All: On File menu "Print Savings Graph", or CTRL+G, the selected data values now default to the age at the current mouse position over the graph (thanks Ric Ordway).
- All: Fixed graph dollar labels on left from moving around after resizing the screen.

- program will now check for a new version when it starts instead of when it exits. This preference can be changed back to check on exit on the Help menu under "Check for Updates"
- browser launch from the application now can pass parameters to all versions of Netscape... so that the purchase and activation process will now work seemlessly on more machines (thanks to Randy Birch at www.mvps.org)
- changed "annual return" columns on cash infusions grid to "growth rate" to provide a less confusing meaning
- fixed bug where extra page was printed after Cover sheet in some cases
- print option for Pro style is now properly saved
- fixed bug in client save "subscript out of range" occurred if you had more than 16 client investments (thanks to Wallace Smith and Bob Coady)
- reworded cash infusions screen text to clarify that it does allow infusions that occur prior to retirement (thanks to Wallace Smith)
- fixed bug on Investments screen where up arrow in last column caused Yes to appear where values were set to No (thanks to Wallace Smith for pointing it out)
- fixed bug on Expenses screen where down arrow in last column caused differing values to appear if you just arrow down the column
- fixed bug in Add Row functions where type value mismatch occurred because new columns added had some blank values
- current age now only allows 2 digits; before if you accidentally entered 3 then it would set retirement age to same value and go into an endless loop telling you both values were too big
- When you go into "retirement mode" by setting current age and retirement age equal, program will now clear the "Other Annual Income" field to $0 so that the income amount from before does not show up as a huge white area on the retirement income graph. This field is for recurring other income that lasts throughout retirement, thus it's not used very often due to the Cash Infusions feature.
- savings graph bars often go behind the data reader boxes, so we moved them to the right hand side to increase the chance that you can see the bars to the top. In the future we may rework this screen to move the readers entirely off the graph.
- Windows 2000 only: Fixed bug where program crashed in "already retired" mode if you changed either Current Balance and hit the Enter key. This occurred only in Windows 2000 and no other versions of windows.

- fixed fencepost error where expenses or infusions thru age 100 were not going all the way to age 100 but were stopping at age 99
- due to variations in the printable page area of different printers, we have changed the font size for the year-by-year numbers on the report to font size 10. This will allow everyone to be able to print all columns. In the future we will be adding more flexibility to the report generation and printing options.

- PRO: On File->New or Close, values are set back to basic default data to reduce confusions between client files

- added important explanation text to Cash Infusions and Investments screens

Version 2001.3 released 2/9/2001
- Some of the values on the spread sheet and on the printed detail reports for version 2001.2 were incorrect due to a bug introduced accidentally in that release; this version corrects those numbers on both the spread sheet and the printed detail reports. The columns affected were "Income from Interest", "Income from Principal" and "Social Security", but only in the retirement years.
- Clarification for this year's release on the methodology for how the retirement years calculations are determined: The Total Investments column shows the beginning of year balance. The Retirement Income Goal amount listed is reduced by any defined benefit payments (pension or social security) for that year, and the remaining shortfall of required income is then taken out as a withdrawal from the Total Investments at the beginning of the year. The interest that is accrued over the remainder of the year on the remaining Total Investments is added back into the balance to reach the Total Investments amount for the beginning of the following year. This interest is listed as "Income from Interest". If your required income for a given year is more than the interest that accrues, then you must dip into your principal to meet your income requirements. This amount is shown in the "Income from Principal" column.
- Note on calculating the Total Investments amount in first year of retirement: That number is a beginning of year number. In the year prior to the year you retire, the program assumes you are still saving for retirement at your specified contribution rates. Thus the Total Investments in the first year of retirement include interest and contributions, company match etc. from the prior year.

Version 2001.2 released 2/7/2001
- Social Security amounts were incorrect on the income graph for the last version 2001.1; if retirement age was less than 62, then it would show Social Security payments even though you cannot get retirement benefits from Social Security prior to age 62; this version 2001.2 corrects this problem.
- If you entered a Current Age in the twenties in version 2001.1 only, the program was crashing depending on what the Retirement Age was set to; this version corrects this problem.
- Changed the spread sheet column names to be more descriptive and easier to understand; changed this on the grid and on the printed detail report.
- Added name, company, address, contact info, etc. to printed detail reports (for PRO version only).
- Added better formatting to the printed detail reports (both Regular and PRO versions).
- Added software version number, copyright information and web address to the printed detail reports at the end of the report.
- Fixed old email addresses on some of the PRO version message boxes.
- Changed Age to Current Age on the detail report to match the main screen input label.
- If user does not enter any assets on the Asset List, the Asset List headers would print on the detail report, but nothing else. This new version prints placeholders if there are no assets.
- User info on the detail report used to print squares in certain places due to bad characters being printed. This new version attempts to eliminate that.

- Increased the maximum output age of the calculation from 90 to 100. The additional years of calculations will appear in the SpreadSheet ONLY, not on the graphs.

"I needed to meet with participants at a client's location. I only had 15 minutes with each person. Retirement Planner allowed me to collect information about each participant as well as quickly illustrate to them their retirement picture, then play "what if" to show them the effect of saving more, retiring later, or getting better investment returns."
